“Amsterdammer” Pastoe original 70’s

The world-famous "Amsterdammer" was designed by Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1978) and produced by Pastoe, a company that has been known for its high-quality cabinets for over 100 years. The cabinet, with its distinctive ribbed roller door, has become a design classic. The name of this cool cabinet is no coincidence; the design is a nod to those iconic Amsterdam bollards that stand everywhere on the sidewalk. These posts were once installed because carriages crashed into facades. Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1944-2010) was an architect and industrial designer. Various designs by Van den Nieuwelaar are (were) part of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. This stunning piece comes from the first owner. Custom made (in 1 of the original Pastoe colors in the 70’s) The Pastoe Amsterdammer is primarily manufactured from lacquered MDF for the cabinet frame and lacquered synthetic material for the distinctive roller door. These high-quality materials ensure a durable construction, allowing the synthetic slats to disappear into the cabinet. Despite the high-quality material, the cabinet shows signs of use consistent with its age. See photos.
