Marino Marini
Marino Marini (1901–1980) was one of the great Italian sculptors of the twentieth century. Born in Pistoia in Tuscany, he worked across sculpture, painting, and printmaking throughout a long career, but it is his sculpture that secured his international reputation — in particular the series of horse and rider figures that he developed from the 1930s onwards and continued to work with for the rest of his life.
These works — cast in bronze, modelled in terracotta, and rendered in plaster — are not equestrian monuments in the traditional sense. The rider's posture shifts over the years from triumph to precarity to collapse, tracing a meditation on heroism, vulnerability, and the condition of the human in the modern world. Marini's work is held in major collections worldwide including the Tate, MoMA, and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Marino Marini's most collected works?
The horse and rider bronzes are the most sought-after, particularly those cast in the 1940s to 1960s. Signed, numbered, and foundry-stamped examples with clear provenance command the highest prices. Works in terracotta and graphics are also collected and represent more accessible entry points for collectors.
